FACE-LATHE
Face-lathe is a hand-held lathe. They are often centuries old and are still used in the restoration field for machining plates or bridges.
They often retain a high degree of precision in the order of a quarter of a millimetre, in other words 25 microns or the equivalent of 1/24 of a hair’s diameter.
As with most tools of this type, a large part of the work is the sharpening of the chisel with respect to these cutting angles and the heat treatments that sometimes go with it.
