Stones used in watchmaking are part of a global field called gemology. In short it is the scientific study of stones. Watchmaking uses gemology because it uses many rare stones. The best known are diamonds as seen above, sapphire, ruby and emerald.

Gemstones in watchmaking are used for decoration and dressing. They can be found on watch cases and dials.

Advantages:
Gemstones are recognized in the luxury world and add a special touch to a timepiece. (PW: It is also a good investment.)

Disadvantages:
Gemstones are unique and must be cut. Sometimes for mass-produced models you have to search a long time to find stones that match.
