GREGORY XIII

Gregory XIII is a pope born on January 7, 1502 in Bologna under the name of Ugo Boncompagni and died on April 10, 1585 in Rome. He is known for having supported science by creating the Gregorian calendar, which bears his name, and replacing the previous calendar which was the Julian calendar. He also commissioned the gallery of maps that can be seen in the Vatican Museums. The maps displayed in this gallery are not all oriented to the north.
