UPDATES, JANUARY 2025
In 2025, Horopedia continues to enrich the multilingual visual content of its website, showcasing Swiss watchmaking schools, museums, and technology.
Among our latest publications are a video on the Neuchâtel Vocational Training Centre (CPNE) and another on Haute École Arc Engineering. This week, we are proudly releasing a new film about the watchmaking school in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, located in Granges. The video will be available in English, French, and German.
In addition, we produced a thorough video on the International Museum of Horology (MIH), presenting its six emblematic objects.
We have also expanded our encyclopaedic entries with expert contributions, including a definition of the dial from Dr. Helmut Crott, and an exploration of enamel and its secrets from the incredible enamel artist Vanessa Lecci.
For those passionate about the craft, we also published an in-depth video on the artisanal creation of a barrel drum, capturing every step of the process and providing essential technical information. This content is perfect for watchmaking students, amateurs, and seasoned experts alike.
In the mechanical principles section, we added a detailed explication of the functioning of different complicated mechanisms that are used in watchmaking, such as remontoire d’égalité (constant-force escapement).
And in watch complications, you may now learn about the date, week day, month and moonphase complications, as well as the equation of time.
ABOUT HOROPEDIA
Horopedia Foundation was established in February 2023 and given the status of public interest. The Foundation Council is composed of Philippe Dufour (President), Dr. Helmut Crott, André Colard, and Marc André Deschoux. The Foundation governs Horopedia.org, the first online video encyclopedia on watchmaking. The platform was launched in 2022 and quickly gathered unanimous support within the community.
To date, over 100 multilingual documentary films on museums, watchmaking schools, watch tools and components, and the mechanical principles behind their work can be found on Horopedia.org. To enhance its educational mission, the platform also incorporates visual pedagogic materials to facilitate a better understanding of the provided information. The website features nearly 900 pages with detailed definitions of watchmaking terms and historical anecdotes about significant horological inventions.
Horopedia.org meticulously covers all facets of the fascinating horological industry in French, English, and German. It offers detailed definitions of tools and complications, 3D images of movements, and thorough video explanations of component production, their history, and functions in a watch. A dedicated section of the website lists horological institutions, including schools and museums in Switzerland and worldwide.
