CAST IRON
- An alloy of iron and carbon. It is a ferrous material containing between 1.7% and 6.7% carbon, obtained by smelting iron ore in a blast furnace. From this crude cast iron, various steels and other cast irons are produced. Common grades of cast iron typically contain about 2% to 4.5% carbon.
