MOTHER-OF-PEARL DIALS
Mother-of-pearl is applied as a thin layer that can entirely or partially cover the dial’s surface, primarily made of brass or gold. The base of the dial is mechanically sectioned to position and precisely index the mother-of-pearl inserts.
The thickness of the mother-of-pearl can vary depending on the specific requirements of each dial, but it typically ranges between 0.20 mm and 0.40 mm for a dial with a total thickness of 0.80 mm.
Despite being delicate, mother-of-pearl is relatively easy to machine. Holes for applique feet can be drilled into it or cut into intricate shapes easily. Once the mother-of-pearl is machined and the metal base is prepared, the mother-of-pearl is adhered to the base. In some cases, the reverse side of the mother-of-pearl is painted to alter its natural colour.
After assembly, subsequent steps, such as pad printing and the setting of appliques, can be carried out in the usual order and method. Mother-of-pearl is also highly suited for hand or mechanical engraving and guilloché work. More rarely, it is valued as a surface for decorative miniature painting.
