TORQUE WRENCH
What is a torque wrench?
A torque wrench is a specialized device used in watchmaking to precisely measure the torque applied to various moving parts of mechanical watches. Its use is especially essential during the development and quality control of mechanisms to ensure optimal, durable, and consistent performance of components.
Functions and applications
-
Measuring the torque of barrels
The barrel, which houses the mainspring, is a key element in energy transmission. The torque wrench quantifies the torque exerted by the spring on the barrel arbor during winding and unwinding. This measurement is crucial for evaluating the available driving force and its consistency, thus guaranteeing a power reserve that meets specifications. -
Checking the rivets of wheels on their pinions
During the assembly of the gear train, wheels are riveted onto their pinions to ensure movement transmission. The torque wrench is used to verify the torque required to guarantee perfect unity between the wheel and the pinion. A precise torque adjustment ensures the mechanism’s longevity and reliability. -
Measuring the torque in hand-setting (chasing the hands)
Some hands undergo rapid accelerations and decelerations, such as chronograph hands during reset. A torque wrench is used to check the grip of the hand on its pivot as well as the hand setting clutch on its cannon pinion.
Working principle
The torque wrench measures torque by recording the torsional force applied to a rotating element. This can be done by various methods depending on the model: mechanical, electronic, or combined. Some instruments use a lever arm connected to a strain gauge or a digital torque sensor, providing immediate and precise feedback of the applied torque value.
Importance in watchmaking
The extreme precision demanded in mechanical watches makes torque measurement indispensable. Improperly adjusted torque can cause:
- Accelerated wear of components.
- Energy loss affecting accuracy.
- Risk of breakage or misalignment of moving parts.
Therefore, the torque wrench is a key instrument in the industrial control of watchmaking, especially during design, development, and quality control phases.
