CUTTING TOOLS
These are tools designed to shape a workpiece by removing material (drilling, turning, milling). They can be mounted on a hand-held tool (such as a chuck or an upright drilling accessory) or on a machine (such as a lathe, milling machine, automatic lathe, drill press, etc.).
CHISELS
Used by many artisans in the watchmaking trade (engravers, watchmakers, micromechanics, etc.), chisels are cutting tools. Their size, shape, and material vary according to the specific requirements of each application. Similarly, chisels can be fitted with a handle and held directly in the artisan’s hand, or they can be mounted onto a machine (fixed chisel, lathe, automatic lathe, CNC machining centre, etc.).
DRILLS
Cutting tools used to bore cylindrical holes. A drill can be employed with handheld tools (such as a chuck (pin vice) or hand drill) or with machines (drill press, lathe, milling machine, etc.). (Synonym: bit).
MILLING CUTTERS
Milling cutters are rotary cutting tools equipped with teeth or protrusions designed for machining operations. Depending on their function and the material being machined, milling cutters can have a wide variety of shapes and profiles (e.g., for machining a mainplate or cutting gear teeth). They are manufactured from hard materials to minimise wear, such as hardened steel, hard metal, tungsten carbide, or diamond.
SCREW PLATES
Screw plates are cutting tools designed to form an external thread — in other words, a screw thread — on the circumference of a cylindrical stem.
TAPS
The tap is a rotary cutting tool used to produce the internal thread of a hole — an operation known as tapping. Engaged in a pilot hole of the appropriate diameter, it progressively cuts, by chip removal, a helix that will then form the seating for a screw.
