Sunburst finish is a technique of Decoration consisting of creating, on the surface of a generally circular component, fine regular striations radiating from the center, like the rays of the sun — hence its name. It is especially appreciated for structuring and animating the surface of a Dial, which then plays with Light: depending on the angle, the rays light up successively, bringing the dial to life. The pattern is obtained using an Abrasive applied tool onto the rotating part, which generates the radiating lines. Sunburst finish is distinct from the Snailing, with arched rays, and the Satin finish, with parallel streaks. Applied to dials, oscillating weights or certain bridges, it ranks among the most widespread finishes, being both elegant and relatively discreet. Its success depends on the regularity and fineness of the rays, as well as their perfect convergence toward the center. Often combined with a color treatment, Sunburst finish gives the dial depth and refinement.
