SNAILING

Snailing is a technique of Decoration consisting of tracing, on the surface of circular components, a pattern of fine arched rays reminiscent of the spiral of a Snail (cam). It is Applied marker typically to ratchets and to wheels of Crown, whose shape it highlights and catches the Light through a Set of curved reflections. The result is achieved by rotating a Disc or an Abrasive tool on the part itself set in rotation: the combination of the two movements creates the characteristic curved striations. Snailing is distinguished from the Sunburst finish, with straight rays radiating from the center, and Circular graining, made of small circles. Both aesthetic and traditional, this decoration contributes to the meticulous finishing of finely crafted movements, where every visible surface receives specific treatment. Its regularity — consistency of the rays and clarity of the grain — reflects the care taken and distinguishes pieces crafted with rigor.
