DIE
A die is a metal mould used to shape or cut an object, or to apply an impression to it (motif in recess and relief). In practice, the die is generally positioned and fixed to the table of a press (fly press, hydraulic press, etc.). The material to be worked is placed over the die, while a punch or hammer strikes the material to cut or stamp it.
Die-striking processes can be used to cut movement components (wheel blanks, springs, etc.) or exterior parts (case middles, links, etc.), or to shape their relief (caseback medallions, dial decoration, etc.).
