VICE

The vice is a tool frequently found on watchmakers’ benches. It can often be dismantled and stored in a drawer when not in use.

The vice is equipped with two jaws which enable an object to be clamped firmly. These jaws are generally made of hardened steel. To avoid damaging the object being clamped, the vise can be fitted with vice-clamps.

The clamped object is sometimes a vice-block (very often in hard wood), which serves as a support for works such as beveling.

Watchmakers’ vices are also often equipped with an anvil that can be used as a support for forging parts, for example.
