EXPANSION

This is the physical phenomenon whereby a body increases in volume, notably under the effect of temperature variations. The extent of this change is specific to each material and is described by its coefficient of thermal expansion. To ensure the precision of a watch, watchmakers seek materials with very low coefficients of expansion, especially for manufacturing balance wheels and balance springs.
