SEIZE (TO SEIZE)

Seize refers to the blocking or sudden braking of two parts in relative movement, due to excessive friction and a lack of lubrication. Seizing occurs when two metal surfaces, insufficiently separated by a film of oil, come into direct contact: local heating, tearing of material, and adhesion of the roughness momentarily “weld” the parts together, which can become scratched, marked, or blocked. In watchmaking, the risk concerns pivots in their jewels, arbors in their bearings, the sliding surfaces of winding and time-setting components, or a forced stem. Typical causes are the absence or degradation of the lubricant, an unsuitable Oil, the presence of abrasive dust, insufficient Set or misalignment. Seizing results in a hard point, irregular running, or even a complete stop. Prevention relies on correct Oiling, suitable operating Sets, cleanliness and, sometimes, a surface treatment that reduces adhesion. This is one of the reasons why Lubrication is so rigorously monitored.
