COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME (UTC)

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is a time scale adopted as the basis for civil time.

UTC is a time scale between International Atomic Time (TAI), which is stable but disconnected from the Earth’s rotation, and Universal Time (UT), directly linked to the Earth’s rotation and therefore slowly variable. In “Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)”, the term “coordinated” indicates that this Time flows identically to International Atomic Time, having its stability and accuracy to within a whole number of seconds, and thanks to an adjustment mechanism implemented whenever necessary, it is shifted by one second so that it remains close to World time / Universal time to within 0.9 s. A modification to UTC is underway to eliminate the need for leap seconds that are used to regulate it. This should take effect by 2035.
