INERTIA BLOCK

The inertia block is a small mass with a dynamic function. In watchmaking, it essentially takes the form of screws or ferrules, most often in Gold, arranged around the periphery of a Balance. Its function is to adjust the Poising and the dynamic Regulation / Adjustment of the regulating organ: by screwing or unscrewing diametrically opposed inertia blocks, or by rotating them, the Inertia of the balance is finely adjusted, and therefore its Frequency, without affecting the Length of the Hairspring (balance spring). This is the principle of the balance with Regulation / Adjustment by Inertia blocks (variable Inertia), reputed to be more stable over Time than traditional Regulation / Adjustment by Regulator, as it eliminates the mobile portion of the Hairspring (balance spring). The symmetrical movement of the Inertia blocks also makes it possible to correct the Poising in order to remove an imbalance. A solution valued in fine watchmaking and chronometry, the Inertia block illustrates the pursuit of a Regulation / Adjustment that is both precise, durable and little affected by handling.
