RELEASE

Release is the setting in motion of a mechanism, achieved either by freeing a hitherto blocked component, or by engaging it with a source of energy. It is the precise instant when a function is activated. The Chronograph offers a characteristic example of this: pressing the Pusher acts on the Lever / Rocker of Release, which engages the Counter with the Train (wheel train) and starts the measurement of Time. The term is also central in striking watches: here, Release refers to the moment when the striking mechanism is freed, either as the hour passes or on command, to activate hammers and gongs. In all cases, Release requires a reliable and secure control device, capable of acting at the right instant without risk of false operation or jamming. Its precision determines the proper sequencing of the Complication involved. Opposed to stopping or jamming, Release illustrates the control logic that governs Chronographs, striking mechanisms, and other mechanisms with activatable functions.
