REVERSER

The reverser is a mechanism that turns a Train (wheel train) always in the same direction, regardless of the direction of rotation of the component driving it. It is mainly found in Automatic winding systems: as the Oscillating weight (rotor) pivots in both directions, the reverser converts these alternating oscillations into a unidirectional rotation suitable for winding the Mainspring, which improves winding efficiency. Different constructions exist — reverser wheel trains, pawls, or roller and cam devices — each seeking to transmit energy in both directions while limiting friction. By extension, the term can designate other devices ensuring a constant-direction rotation. A key element of the Automatic, the Reverser determines the efficiency with which wrist movements recharge the watch; its reliability and smoothness of operation are therefore given particular care, as it works continuously as soon as the watch is worn.
