WHIP

In watchmaking, the whip is a Lever / Rocker or a lever that triggers a function through a Movement that is quick, sharp and sudden, under the effect of a spring. This instantaneous Release is sought when a change of state must occur cleanly, without any intermediate position. The whip is found in various mechanisms: the whip of the “Foudroyante” (flying seconds) second, which releases the hand for its successive jumps, or certain striking mechanisms and Date / Calendar devices where a clean-cut action is required. The whip gradually stores the energy of a spring, then releases it all at once when freed by a Camor a neck chain (sautoir), briskly driving the controlled component. Its design requires a delicate balance between the spring’s strength, the geometry of the lever, and shock control, in order to ensure reliable operation without bounce or excessive wear.
